June 2011

Active Seniors Day, Victoria Park, Tuesday 14th June

All manner of activities were available free of charge for senior citizens, from line dancing to fire safety advice, from health counselling to massages, from advice on making wills to rides on a dray pulled by Clydesdale horses.

Free lunches and smoothies were enjoyed, and the Neighbourhood Watch stall was busy as usual with promotional items and leaflets on crime prevention.

Banner Road Residents Association Gala Day, Knightswood, Saturday 4th June

The second annual gala day was well attended by local residents. Glasgow West NWA had a busy stall and a lot of interest was shown in establishing new Neighbourhood Watch groups in the area.

November 2010

Due to changes in Strathclyde Police policy, there is no longer a Community Safety Department in the Glasgow West area, although Neighbourhood Watch is still assured of police support. This means that the Association has lost the services of Officer Colin Laird, who has worked tirelessly for Neighbourhood Watch for the past three years. He attended events with us, promoted NHW at every opportunity and added several groups to our numbers. We are sorry to lose him and wish him well in his new post.

The Association of Scottish Neighbourhood Watches held its annual awards ceremony this month, and Glasgow West Crime Prevention Panel and Neighbourhood Watch Association came away with two gongs. PC Colin Laird collected Most Supportive Partner for his work in the Community Safety Unit, and this website won the Innovation in Communication award.

The Glasgow West CPP and NWA committee was very pleased to receive this recognition. You can read a report of the awards on the Evening Times website.

March 2010

Would the vigilant members of our community please note that some non-bogus callers will be operating in the area over the next month or so. Sky TV will be conducting research between 26 March and 31 April 2010, and the British Red Cross will be legitimately collecting between 5 April and 2 May 2010.

As always, please remember to ask callers for identification.

Crime News

An elderly lady in Glasgow was recently telephoned by someone claiming to be from the 'Scottish Government Home Office'. She was told that she had been chosen as one of four winners in her area of 'a burglar alarm system'. When she asked the caller to put the information in writing he said that someone would call her back in ten minutes. She was called back over an hour later.

The first caller was a man with an English accent; the second was a woman with a Scottish accent. The caller also asked the lady's age. She did not give them any information and immediately contacted the Government to check the validity of the call. The Scottish Government is not giving away free alarm systems.

If you are contacted by someone claiming to be from the Scottish Government or the Home Office, do not give them any personal details. Ask them to contact you in writing. Any genuine organisation will understand the need to be careful.

If you think you or someone you know has been contacted by a bogus caller, contact your local police and give them as much information as you can about the incident. You can get more information on how to deal with bogus callers by downloading this leaflet from the Association of Scottish Neighbourhood Watches website.

Laura Green has moved away from the area and is therefore stepping down as Vice-Chair. The Committee took her out to lunch to thank her for all the work she has done for the Association.

June 2009

Members of the Association attend gala days and other events throughout the year, distributing information leaflets and useful items in the fight against crime. We also explain how to set up Neighbourhood Watch groups to those interested in improving the safety of the community.

January 2009

In January we held our Annual General Meeting which included a buffet supper, quiz and fund-raising raffle. This year we also had a special presentation to make.

Jimmy Young, who has given many years to the Association, was forced to stand down as Chairman due to ill health. He was surprised and delighted to receive a crystal plaque from members and gifts from the police. These were presented by both the current and previous superintendents of AD Division, along with sincere thanks for Mr Young's dedication to Neighbourhood Watch. Mrs Young was presented with an arrangement of flowers.
