Tax Refund Email Scam
HMRC has warned of a dramatic increase in fraudulent emails claiming to offer a refund in overpaid taxes. These emails link to a fake HMRC website where users are invited to enter their bank account or credit card details.
HMRC says "Customers who are owed a tax refund will only ever be contacted by post." HMRC do not inform customers about tax refunds via email or telephone, or through external companies. If you receive a suspicious email claiming to be from HMRC, please forward it to
phishing@hmrc.gsi.gov.uk. Do not click on any links in the email, or open attachments. If you think you have been the victim of an email scam, report the matter to your bank or card issuer without delay.
